Billericay Kitchen Refit: Which Skip Size Do You Need?

renovated kitchen Ripping out an old kitchen makes a lot of mess. Units, worktops, tiles and old appliances all have to go somewhere, and most of it will not fit in your normal bin. If you are planning a kitchen refit in Billericay, the easiest way to clear it all is with skip hire in Billericay. The tricky bit is working out which size skip you actually need. Get it right and you save money. Get it wrong and you end up paying for a second skip halfway through the job.

What Actually Ends Up In A Skip During A Kitchen Job

  • Old kitchen units and cupboard doors
  • Worktops, including heavy stone or laminate ones
  • Broken tiles and grout from the walls or floor
  • Old flooring, such as lino or wooden boards
  • Rubble from knocking through a wall or removing a chimney breast
  • Packaging from new units and appliances
  • Old sinks, taps and small amounts of pipework

Heavy items like tiles, rubble and old worktops weigh a lot more than they look, so weight matters just as much as size when you are choosing a skip.

4 Yard Skip Or 6 Yard Skip?

For most kitchen refits, the choice comes down to two sizes. Here is how they compare.

4 Yard Skip 6 Yard Skip
Holds roughly 30 to 40 bin bags 50 to 60 bin bags
Best for A small to medium kitchen with a straightforward strip out A larger kitchen, or a refit that also involves knocking through a wall
Good if Space on your drive is tight You have more rubble, tiles or old flooring to clear
Permit needed Only if it goes on the road Only if it goes on the road

A 4 yard skip is usually enough for a single galley kitchen where you are swapping like for like: units out, units in, with a bit of tiling waste. If your refit also includes removing a chimney breast, changing the layout, or ripping up old flooring across a bigger space, a 6 yard skip gives you the extra room so you are not stacking waste above the sides of the skip, which most skip companies will not collect.

If you are still not sure, it is worth thinking about your job as two piles: the units, doors and worktops in one pile, and the tiles, rubble and flooring in the other. If both piles look sizeable, go with the 6 yard option.

What You Cannot Put In A Kitchen Skip

  • Fridges, freezers and other items containing gas
  • Paint, solvents and other liquids
  • Gas bottles or pressurised canisters
  • Asbestos, including old asbestos-containing tiles
  • Batteries

If your kitchen refit is turning up any of these, keep them separate. They need specialist disposal rather than going in with the rest of your renovation waste.

Rubble, Tiles And Weight Limits

Rubble and tiles are heavy, and skip companies set weight limits to keep the lorry safe to lift and transport. If your kitchen job includes taking down a wall or removing a solid floor, mention this when you book so you get a skip rated for the extra weight rather than one that is technically the right size but not built for heavy rubble.

Booking Your Skip

Once you know your rough waste split, booking is straightforward. Clearaway covers Billericay and the surrounding area, and our waste disposal service sorts as much of your kitchen waste as possible for recycling rather than landfill. If you are unsure whether your refit needs a 4 yard or 6 yard skip, give the team a call before you book and they will talk you through it based on the size of your kitchen and the scope of the job.

If you want to check how to get rid of anything unusual that comes out of the refit safely and legally, GOV.UK has guidance on disposing of household waste responsibly, including what to check before using a skip or clearance company.
